The Coast

Time for a catch-up blog. I've had a nice week -- on Saturday walked from Robin Hoods Bay to Whitby along the clifftop with James, stopping to watch the seabirds nesting in the cliff face. So many seabirds, mostly kittiwake gulls, crammed into tiny spaces in the cliff. It seems that whatever the terrain, nature will find a way of adapting to it. We had a meal at the famous Magpie restaurant, and between us, shared a lot of truths and hope through the day.

Sunday radio show. Monday pub quiz, where we improved on last-place finish, because this time around we finished joint-last!!! (with a team that left half-way through) hahaha

Caught up with my Nan in the week.. seeing her every week at the moment. She loves me a lot, for that I'm grateful, and I always think its important to know the people who love you the most, and return it however you can.

I've been doing a lot of PLANNING this week.... for my two biggest events of the year... well, the two which will require the most planning anyway. It seems like I've sent out a zillion text messages this week.

Firstly, I've been planning my 30th birthday.... This has got me thinking a lot about growing up and "aging" ... if i even have the right to use the word aging when i'm not even 30 yet. Initially , I was planning on having two birthday nights - friday: england world cup mathc, saturday: big meal... but the meal is off now because most people were more interested in the friday.... so my 30th birthday will now be watching England v Algeria in the World Cup in a pub beer garden with all my mates around me... and to be quite honest, that's exactly how I want to be spending it.. and a meal might have been a little awkward, integrating people and making sure everyone fits in and enjoys it etc, which I always seem to feel more responsible for than I should!!!!

The other thing I've been planning madly is my half-marathon run on 19th September . . . The Great North Run... I'm running half for Kidscan - Children's cancer charity. and half for York Hospital Radio... and I have persuaded my mate John Garnham to run and do the same. However, this causes problems, when it comes to justgiving web sites etc - i mean, the raising for two charities.....

so we decided the best way to do it... is that all the money I raise goes to Kidscan, and that all the money he raises goes to York Hospital Radio... to make it easier for the two charities to receive the money..... although technically we're still both running for both charities if that makes sense.

We met up last night to talk about it, and plan it all, because it requires quite a lot of planning, and I'm seeing my friend Chris Patterson later tonight who's also running it for Kidscan, and hopefully the three of us are going to get some overnight accommodation booked for the night before.

The best thing, however, about meeting up with John last night, is that he is a massive football fan, and he's got me really excited about the World Cup again. I was worried that I wasn't going to get into it as much this year - but now I can safely say I am... and I'm incredibly excited about England's prospects and the World Cup as a whole... starting June 10th , finishing July 11th. I'm going to have a BIG bet on England to win :-) Ok, this is crazy, but the bet is going to be 200 pounds. It will be worthwhile though, cos I love the World Cup. Simple as.

Been running a lot. This morning, I ran past a car with a sticker that said "PRINCESS ON BOARD" but it was a lie, because there was just an ugly-looking girl in the back seat.

Tonight, I'm playing a poker tournament at a mate's house.. Really looking forward to this, cos I love poker and haven't played for ages. Only five pound buy-in, playing through the night, then radio show tomorrow morning.

Well, one particular scene is turning into the biggest scene of probably the entire book!!!

It is the night out scene ( first of two nights out that will occur in the book )....

All the words I've done today have been on this scene...

I've done the end of the bit in the pub, which leads to the start of the club.
And also another bit of the conversation / dialogue in the pub.

The characters and their little sayings

Giving the characters their little sayings.

It seems that with a character , to make them come alive in a book, you need to take their most unique traits then exaggerate and repeat them. Also, when making characters ,, you need to express a finite number of things about them....

So, you might meet someone in real life and think.. oh they do this and do that and etc etc... But then you can only pick just a very few traits of their personality and then keep repeating them.. because a book has limited space to express personality, so you need to focus on the same few key things again and again... so that the personalities are made up of just those bits... and so, with fewer traits, are therefore a lot more clear.

My favourite squirrel saying I put in this morning: "It's as dull as dishwashers, mate."

Done the third counselling scene.

1 and 2 are already done. They have a really interesting unique tone to them, and there isn't a set limit to how many scenes I'll do. Just that there will be a definite last one.

In that respect, I feel I've achieved quite a bit with this theme, and it feels quite a safe structural part, as opposed to some of the other bits which would easily topple down at the moment.

Fluffy Gosling Attack

oh those goslings don't show up very well. They do when the picture is big, but the picture isn't big. It's all going pear-shaped.
--
I'm going to the coast, the coast, the coast
I'm going to the coast, the coast, the coast,
I'm taking my bucket and spade
And I'm gonna get laaaaaaaid
--
(i'm not gonna get laid, i just said it cos it rhymes with spade)

Continuing my catch-up blog... Sunday was a sad day for York City, but there's a lot of HOPE and optimism for next season... sad result, but great day apart from that... came back to kings cross, had more drinks, and i also nipped off to catch up with Phil cos i hadn't seen him since February - was great to see him.
--
Monday, went for a meal at Ha Ha Bar with my Mum. She loved it, and she was so talkative, which was lovely to see. I love seeing my mum happy! I think the world of her.
Sometimes I think she would have liked a daughter to talk about things like crafts and shopping and baking and all the girly things. Well, I know she would have liked a daughter, bless her.
--
Tuesday, got back to The Habit, drinking with Chris and James. I added my Lemons quote to their quote wall. Picking one quote is always hard.... and the great thing about the quote wall there, is everyone can just pick one thing to say, and its interesting seeing what statement people make with just one quote. It really goes to show that everyone is different in what is important to them.
--
Wednesday, had a really cool night at the hospital radio AGM and then in the pub afterwards. Highlights of the meeting included the news that new football commentators will be needed at York City at some point (i have applied!!!!) and the start of "Friends of York Hospital Radio" for people who can get involved but not be members. Caught up with Jen - what a wonderful friend, made me realise that I miss the nights we used to spend training to be presenters and the enthusiasm and the dream etc etc etc.... Met some new members (always exciting!!!) and chatted with John Hodgson about how I should do my first updates on the Web site, and am gonna meet with him the week after next to do that!!!!
--
Thursday, had a meal at Ha Ha Bar (again :-) ) with my friend Ruth... She bought me flowers... no-one ever buys me flowers so that's really sweet....a really kind friend and one who doesn't mind me being really childish and carefree!
--
Last night, worked with some great people on Samaritans overnight, and had such a laugh. Especially at the name Margo. I didn't think anyone was really called Margo except that woman off the Good Life and she's not real. It would be cool to grow your own veg like that.

Working on tone

well today working on my tone throughout the book.. and having a really good think about the characters and their development... soon it will be the case of highlighting what's missing about each character and attacking it.

X-Factor

Hello. Blog!

I've had a busy two weeks, and have been out I think every single night, except maybe one.

Last week, me and James managed to come last in the Old White Swan quiz. Even more embarrassing than that, , we got a total of zero points on the picture round. This was despite lots of "I'm sure it's him" or "It has to be her" guesses. However, on the plus side, that won us the biggest round of applause for the night, and we had some great sausages (and sausages feel like good consolation prizes)

I went drinking with Mike Burns, who plays.. sorry, played Colin in the Britass Empire.. he's such a relaxed, down-to-earth, genuine guy.

Played snooker with Pete, but wasn't really in the mood for snooker (THAT is why I lost) then we went to the three-legged mare -- near the minster, which I've been going to a lot lately.

Went to York Races with Neil and Leanne.. A cool thing happened... A woman walked past and without realising, dropped a pen and it landed on our newspaper. The pen was pointing to a page with NEWMARKET racing on.... so even though we were at York races, of course the lucky pen was telling me to bet on something at Newmarket... so I did, and it won!!! The pen didn't have the same luck second time around, but then it did well overall considering it is only a pen.

I also won a race on the outsider. However, there were only 5 horses and so the outsider was 6-1. At the end, concluding all York and Newmarket bets, I finished a total of £1 up!!! Lol, I'll have to keep track of my record for the year. For the last two years, I've been to every meeting, but I'm not going to go as much this year due to job, finances etc.

My job is the most boring thing ever!! I have applied for another job at (I think it's called Grant Rail).. or something? in the centre of York....

Last saturday, a really cool unique opportunity!! I was judge in "Nurse Factor"... X-Factor with Nurses"" what could be better.... I went along knowing no-one except my friend John Garnham who thankfully went with me for support. Sat on a panel of three, with two women judges, and watched various singing, dancing, humorous acts put together by the nurses of 3 of the hospital wards. The event was at a social club with a big stage - The Health Service Club - and was raising money for new equipment for the hospital - so a great cause.

Judging was a laugh.. especially as a little boy enjoyed offering his opinion with me. I wasn't too Simon Cowell-ish but managed some fun laughs, like saying someone was terrible then getting booed!! Haha, I had to do that. Great fun feeling like Simon Cowell for the evening. The event was won by two women dressed in wobbly fat costumes doing dances to pop songs like Ice Ice Baby! haha

Went to Wembley on Sunday... 8 of us... and various other City fans who i met there.. we went out to a pub in Kings Cross... which ironically i used to frequent when I stayed in London more... then headed over to the ground..... Unfortunately , City lost 3-1... so failed to get promoted, and that bit was gutting.... Atmosphere and fans at Wembley Stadium was great though!!!!

We graced the quiet coach on the way back by blaring out "The bird's the word" tune... (well, there wasn't a loud coach so....)

70,000 words!!!!

Woohoo 70,000!!!!

Tonight I've done the first half of the fourth scene featuring Claire. Based it a lot on meeting Ruth last night.

69,000!

All kinds of different opinions on my book lately, which I'm grateful for.

A reminder that its a long long way off being finished, but it's fun doing it, and it's just about the journey of it really. Massively cathartic and magical and enjoyable.

"All I have to do is follow my path and follow it with my head held high. People can hurt me and make me cry and sometimes, even break me.

But they can’t stop me following my path.

The only person who can stop me following my path is me."

"What once seemed impossible now seemed a distant dream."

Characters and speech

Developing my characters and their speech this morning.

Main Characters -

Mark - based on my friend in London. Mark is the link to the adult entertainment world, nd that side of the story.

Rufus - Actually of anyone, Rufus is mostly based on my old friend Kieran White. The main reasons of Rufus being in the book is 1) he's a musician, hence an artist - so a great avenue for wisdom and someone to look up to. .. 2) A very free-spirited and larger-than-life character, creating a nice contrast with the storyteller.

James - Based on Jim from the radio station. A balance of authority, quirkyness and wisdom.

Dominic - Based on my friend Rich - an eccentric unusual character, with very stand-out mannerisms and a lot of good qualities/traits in there.

Simon - Based on my friend Simon from the radio. A younger character - one of the best facets here is adding excitement, ambition and energy to the story.

Olia - Use as various emotional points - love interest, and someone whose story evolves a lot throughout the book.

Claire - Based mostly on my friend Lexi, with splasehes of other people in there. Very much a confidante, and outlet for wisdom, and alternate outlooks in the book.

The Counsellor - Self-explanatory really.

That's them all. I don't think there will be any more main characters introduced.

Electronic weekend

Time to catch up with a blog.

Firstly, I have the most boring job in the entire world ever. Glorified data input and a job that i take absolutely nothing from whatsoever, and so need to keep looking once more. ITs so important not to waste time, and I feel like I'm wasting the largest part of 8 hours every week day. Rant over.

Slightly more politics rant before I forget. I know I've ranted about this before on here... but didn't quite put it across as I would have liked.

I didn't vote. The reason being that is my stand. A woman I work with was annoyed with me for not voting, but also said that all the parties are the same and they're all a disgrace (went on to talk about MP's expenses scandal etc) but then she saw it as her duty to vote for one of them.

Ultimately, if our politicians aren't encouraging us to vote, and if politics in this country is extremely dull..mainly due to the dishonesty, false images etc, then it is our choice to be able to stand up for that by not voting. And I don't mean going along and spoiling the paper. I mean I have considered all the options and my choice is to be apathetic.

My weekend's been unusual and really cool in an unusual way. The reason being I hadn't any plans (except to write 2,000 words) all weekend, and my whole weekend got filled with things cropping up on the Internet.

The first thing was that someone has invited me to be a judge next weekend at some "Nurse Factor" - like X-factor with nurses - couldn't say no to that!!!

I've been chatting (via plentyOfFish initially) to a girl who is moving up to York to live. She is from Vancouver and has been in london for a few months. She'll be totally new to York, so I'm going to introduce her to the city, make her feel settled etc. That's really exciting. One of the main reasons is that (apart from the fact she's really excited by her adventure).. is that hardly anyone from abroad comes to live in York. Despite the hoards of tourists, it is one of the least multi-cultural cities in the UK, considering its size.

This girl seems really nice, and it's nice to make a new friend in a new way.

Della (hello if you're reading) returned to the Internet saturday night. I missed her friendship so it was wonderful to catch-up, and have laughs on-line like we used to.

Graham and Paula had a nice weekend away in the lakes - part of me wished i was there, but things were up in the air financially until recently so I didnt want to risk going away. All being well, going away in July though.

This morning, I booked Wembley train tickets. I made a stupid mistake. I booked a ticket for the train going down which turned out to be a ticket for over 60's. This is actually really easy to do, the Web site is silly, my mate would have made the same mistake if I hadn't pointed it out.

York City are at Wembley next Sunday. The whole day will cost me about £150!! Bit upset by that, but will really enjoy the day, so shouldn't complain. I really really hope we win too to get us back in the football league.

Finally, my electronic weekend ended with a lovely chat with Paula tonight.

For the week ahead - monday a meal with James, tuesday samaritans+gillian, wednesday snooker with pete, then friday hopefully hook up with the canadian girl and help her feel at home as she comes up to see her new city :-)

More editing

Reaching a really significant stage with the book........ it feels like the end of phase 1 is being reached.... working on some of the less strong scenes that may eventually be cut.

York City

hi, i'm gonna blog about thursday cos it was interesting....

before that, i had an interesting radio show today as the computer system was misbehaving massively and kept sticking during songs.... it involved lots of apologising, ad-libbing and "staying professional".. and playing Bryan Ferry "Let's Stick Together" It proved to be an interesting show as a lot had happened to wake up to this morning, including a car bomb in New York and the game of snooker being brought into disrepute... which is a very sad and staggering to believe story.. as john higgins is not only number one in the world, but also a model professional / perfect role-model. Or was, anyway. Very sad... especially as snooker is one sport you don't associate with that kind of thing. I wonder if he rigged the game he lost against Steve Davis.

Thursday, I went to the footy with my mates. But it was no ordinary football match. It was special for being York City's play-off semi-final, and attracted a sell-out crowd to the stadium.. which is very rare! And I was going along working for the BBC.. which was a dream.

It was absolutely chucking it down too... which meant I walked there with my BBC microphone hidden in my inside pocket (by the way, the microphone is a pulling tool, and is the coolest thing to carry round cos its blue and has BBC on in massive letters.. it's like carrying a big blue cock around)

Anyway, I was absolutely massively paranoid about this microphone. Even though they are very sturdy things, I had this paranoia, because I knew if I dropped it , it would be the end of the world... so I was huddling it in my inside pocket so no-one could see it... and then was paranoid getting into the stadium in the packed queues - paranoid that it would get squashed lol... which was just me being a pansy cos its a sturdy thing really...

Got into the ground...stood at the back... continued by paranoid pansy approach to people crushing against us and past us..... It's funny cos usually one of the best parts of a footy game is feeling free to jump against someone , push them whatever when it gets exciting.... but i was paranoid about being squashed...

Second half, moved places, due to paranoia, to one end of the stand, though it was still packed there.

Ok, so I was being over-the-top protective.

In the last minute, some guy I recognise comes up to me and says hi and is really pleased to see me.

I can't reveal showing off, and letting him glimpse what was in my pocket (that's not a metaphor)

Showed him the microphone with its BBC in big letters. The guy, Terry, obviously had poor eyesight, as he questioned what it was, even though it was glaringly obvious....

so.... reluctantly, got it out of my pocket and showed him.....

at which point the crowd went wild, as our striker was unexpectedly given a chance. In the madness, I turned to look at the pitch, while quickly putting the microphone back in the inside pocket.

Only I missed my pocket and the mic dropped hard onto the floor then fell down four steps onto the wet floor amongst people's legs.

We scored a last minute winner, so everyone went wild.... including me , who was going wild, while also watching people madly jumping up and down all around the mic on the floor haha... which incidentally had lost its protective cover.

Bizarre.

The mic thankfully, despite its fall was not injured and continued to work. To my surprise when stood outside the ground interviewing fans after the game, goalscorer and match hero Richard Brodie walked past, so I got to interview him :-)

Editing

Just done a book editing session..... I've got so many little pieces so it's a task now of fitting all the pieces together, seeing what I'm missing, and then seeing if it's possible to fit in the bits that are missing, or whether I'm going to have to work around them.

Radio placement

helloooooo

thought i'd write a new blog and catch-up....

been out today...pretty drunk as i was out for 8 hours...but had one and a half meals in between so not that drunk.... was out on a samaritans meet-up..and also hooked up with my mate shane from the radio...... adam came up with the idea that prisoners should be made to use their time in prison by cycling in order to create renewable energy for everyone else..... lol

i've had two week's work experience at BBC Radi#o York - so unpaid leave from work - It's been a real eye-opener.... I'm wanting to get into radio, so the placement made sense.... but what was very new to me, was that it was working within their busy newsroom... so essentially i was a journalist and working with other journalists around me.... an atmosphere that was really really new to me... people working very hard, at an insanely fast pace, and often needing to be abrasive etc......

I had some amazing times in the two weeks... the highlights being collecting voxes (outside interviews with members of the public) from people in the street, parents and teachers at school gates, people coming out of church, people in the park (museum gardens), people at the football etc... always asking questions in relation to the news, in order to be broadcast on the following morning's breakfast show.

I also got to interview Richard Brodie after watching York's 1-0 play-off win against Luton where he scored a last-minute winner... That was an absolute dream to be doing something like that. I was the only one who got the interview..so..erm.. an exclusive :-)

Although the voice of those I interviewed appeared a lot in the shows, my own voice only appeared once.... on this morning's breakfast show.. as I went to visit a vintage clothing store setting up in York .. ( i sounded very camp.. it is about 1 hour 37 in if you fancy searching at www.bbc.co.uk/york .. then finding where you can "Listen Again" to Julia Booth's saturday show.)

The bad news is the BBC chose not to extend my work experience, but the glimmer of hope is I made a couple of good contacts there.. that are more "radio"ish rather than "journalist"y .. so I am hoping something will come from those.

Hospital radio shows are going well, and I'm on tomorrow.
