Giving the characters their little sayings.
It seems that with a character , to make them come alive in a book, you need to take their most unique traits then exaggerate and repeat them. Also, when making characters ,, you need to express a finite number of things about them....
So, you might meet someone in real life and think.. oh they do this and do that and etc etc... But then you can only pick just a very few traits of their personality and then keep repeating them.. because a book has limited space to express personality, so you need to focus on the same few key things again and again... so that the personalities are made up of just those bits... and so, with fewer traits, are therefore a lot more clear.
My favourite squirrel saying I put in this morning: "It's as dull as dishwashers, mate."
